ReplyDeleteI believe I am also going to talk about Dalton Trumbo's use of first person narration. Revealing that the 15 year old boy thinks highly of his father because he takes time thinking about how to tell his father he's going fishing with someone else. The son does not want to hurt his father but desires to maintain thier pleasent relationship.

ReplyDeleteThe passage is not in first person. If you'd like the extra credit, you need to re=post with an accurate lit device used in the piece. Make a stronger connection between the lit device and your ideas on answering the prompt.
The literary device I plan to use is the author's use of thrid person limited point of view. I plan to use this device to demonstrate how a background on the characters and their annual trip is given from an outside point of view. Also how this background information explains why the son is hesitant and a bit nervous about telling his father about his plans, because he knows that his father may be disappointed and upset after hearing his son's intentions.

I plan to use the syntax between lines 29-42 in comparison to the syntax in lines 43-55 to demonstrate how the young man's feelings while asking his father show how close their relationship is. The syntax during lines 29-42 gives off a sense of hesitation due to the way the conversation's dialogue is portrayed. which means that the conversation was quite awkward for the young man. In lines 43-55 the syntax after the young man talked to his father has completely changed into a more relaxed state shown through the way the paragraph flows. Showing how the young man is somewhat relieved.
ReplyDeleteThrough the use of various types of syntax such as sentence structure, and sentence type, I will use it to convey Joe's father close affectionate relationship with his son as well as Joe's guilt that he feels as if he has betrayed his father by going with Bill Harper and demonstrates the close knit personal relationship that Joe feels with his father for quite some time now.

I plan to talk about the unusual syntax, specifically that there is no dialogue. This suggests to the reader that both Joe and his father’s actions speak louder than their words, that they are more important. Joe fishing with Bill Harper instead of his father for the first time signals that Joe is becoming less dependent on his father. When Joe’s father gives Joe his valuable fishing rod it shows how close they are and also shows that his father recognizes that Joe is becoming more independent. I will use the lack of dialogue to show the close bond between Joe and his father, but also Joe’s transition away from his father.
ReplyDeleteI will make use of the difference in syntax with regards to the opening and closing of the passage. I will use syntax to show the emotions felt by the son. In the opening there are very short sentences and the son is apprehensive about asking his about going fishing with a friend. As the son gets closer and closer to asking his dad the sentences become even more short, rigid and choppy. After the son asks for permission (not only receiving it, but his father's prized rod) his excitement is palpable through his comparatively longer sentences and more flowing language. This signals that the son feels nervous, and therefore reserved, before asking his dad, and excited and relived after asking his dad.
ReplyDeleteI plan to talk about the lack of dialogue and how it contributes to the characterization of Joe and his father by describing what they say rather than quoting what they say exactly. This characterizes them by allowing a reliable narrator to describe their thoughts and actions.
ReplyDeleteI think I will use symbolism, with the father’s fishing rod as the symbol. The fishing rod represents the relationship between Joe and his father because the son comments on the rod often. It will help me prove that the two have a close relationship. The father’s offer to let his son use his fishing rod shows his character and how he feels toward his son. Joe’s response to the offer shows how he feels toward his father.

I am going to use the symbolism of the father's fishing rod to demonstrate the caring relationship between the father and son. The rod is cleaned and cared for yearly, like the annual trip they take fishing is thoughtfully planned out. Additionally, the fact that the father is loaning his son the rod shows how trusting and loving their relationship is, since the son states that it is his father's most prized possession and it is the first time the son is fishing with someone else.
ReplyDeleteI plan to use syntax. The short sentences punctuating the more complicated and runny sentences has a sharp effect. They highlight how the relationship between the son and father are one of mutual respect and understanding.
ReplyDeleteI think I will be using symbolism, with the rod symbolizing the strength in the son and father's relationship. Though the two have been going on the trip together ever since he was seven, the father shows no sign of anger when his son tells him that he wants to go fishing with his friend, rather than him. Not only that, but he also entrusts him with the rod that basically means the entire life to his dad. The rod symbolizes how much the father is willing to trust his son, and how loving their relationship can be.

ReplyDeleteI plan on using symbolism to show how the author portrays how the relationship and mood(s) of the characters reflects either an object of importance, or the characters' surroundings at the time of the portrayal. I'll use the surroundings in the first and last paragraphs to show how Joe begins feeling awkward and nervous around his father, but eventually is able to feel more comfortable around him. I'll also use the fishing rod to show how the author has connected the rod and Joe.

ReplyDeleteI will be using the selection of detail to convey the strong trust between father and son. From line 43-55 Trumbo describes with great detail how much it meant for the boy's dad to let him use his rod. This shows the son how much his father trusts him, and notices he is old and responsible enough to handle it.
I plan to use setting as a way to represent the changing relationship of the young man and his father. The forest could symbolize how the young man wants to go on his own and gain independence. Also, since there is no use of dialogue, it shows the closeness of the young man and his father. They don't need words to express what they feel for each other which shows how strong their relationship is.
ReplyDeleteI will utilize the different sentence lengths to show how the characters are feeling at certain times. The short sentences will explain how the son and his father are feeling disappointed and sad. The longer, complex sentences will show how the son thinks less of the situation (him not fishing with his dad) and focuses more on the fishing rod and fishing with Bill Harper (ignoring the situation).

One literary device I plan on using is syntax. Syntax is used when the son and father are talking. The son's long lines of dialogue compared to the father's short, quick statements, emphasize that there is a conflict between the two, which obviously affects their relationship. When the son talks, he is explaining how their relationship is starting to drift, while the father is upset about the situation.

ReplyDeleteI will show how the selection of detail in the passage is used to demonstrate the importance of the ritual of camping for the father and son. As well as how the son's point of view, when he feels he is breaking their ritual by fishing with someone else. This shows the boy is maturing and becoming more independent but also still cares for his father. The father also notices his son becoming more independent and responsible becuase he give his son his most prize possetion the fishing rod. Futher revealing the immense bond they have with each other.
I will be using third person limited point of view to show how hearing a narration of the thoughts and feelings of only one character affects the story. By only being able to view the thoughts of Joe, it shows how the character feels towards his father.

I plan to use the symbolism of the tent to show Johnny's first steps out of his comfort zone with his dad and into the social wilderness that is making a new friend. Also, throughout the passage, many things seem to call to him from outside of the tent like the pine needles that sound like rain or Bill Harper.

ReplyDeleteI will be using syntax to analyze the feelings between Joe and his father and how they affect their relationship with each other. The shortened statements suggest that the father is upset about the son going fishing with someone else, but that he does not want to ruin his sons day.
For tomorrow's timed write, i plan on analyzing Trumbo's use of choppy syntax to prove that Joe was very hesitant and worrisome about telling his father that he wanted to fish with his friend during that year's camping trip. Going along further, i will use this to prove Joe's intimate relationship with his father, having been constantly worrying about how his father might feel and react.
