The timed write winner is...

Symbolism (14 votes)!

Here is the prompt again:
2009. A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning.
Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot. You may choose a work from the list below or another novel or play of comparable literary merit.

Please keep in mind that the prompt asks for ONE symbol, which is defined as an object, action, or event. Please think about one symbol from Gatsby that you could write about in tomorrow's timed write. I will let you use your books (but only to paraphrase--later in the year, you won't get to use your book at all for the Q3), so you might want to put some post it notes in places where key quotes about the symbol are located.

See you tomorrow.
