Young Goodman Brown

1. Please pick up a copy of The Scarlet Letter from the Oceana library and bring it with you on Wednesday.

Read “Young Goodman Brown” on pages 316-329 in Perrine’s. As you read, either use Post it Notes or a sheet of binder paper to track the following:

a.      Notes on diction: What do you notice about Hawthorne’s word choice? How would you characterize it?

b.      The setting of the forest—what might it symbolize?

c.      A few examples of literary devices used that seem particularly meaningful

d.      The main conflict

e.      The significance of the name “Faith”

Take notes on the following questions on pages 328-329: 2, 6, 8, 9, 10. Be prepared to discuss these on Wednesday.
